How to use shapes in your house when designing [30 seconds read]
Shape is another one of the seven elements interior designers consider when designing a space. (We previously covered line here.)
Know the space
The first step to using shapes correctly is understanding the existing structure of the room. Is it a space with four walls and a ceiling or are there beams, odd angles or recesses in the wall to consider? Which of the structures are visually pleasing and which aren’t?
Designing around the space
Next, consider using design devices to improve the structure’s appearance. If, for example, a space has low ceiling and shorter windows, curtains hung high at the top of the wall can give the illusion of longer windows and greater height.
It is also important to consider personal preferences. Do you like furniture that are matching or contrasts in style? If it is the latter, a room with lots of square, minimal furniture may need a round coffee table.
Personalisation is key
There is no one size fits all method to using shapes. Generally though, a balance of shapes adds variety and vibrancy to a space. If the shape of your living room is squarish, Try incorporating round rugs or curved sofas to soften the space. Incorporating a limited number of shapes into a room brings about a sense of calm and balance for all who enters it.
