The Moroccan interior design style [1 minute read]
Other than the tropical interior design style, Moroccan is another uncommon style in Singapore.
Morocco is situated in North Africa, between Europe and Africa, with coastlines running along both the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Heavily influenced by the many cultures surrounding it, Moroccan decor blends styles from France, Portugal and Spain. It also bears Islamic, Mediterranean, African and Persian influence.
The style’s use of saturated colours and intricate patterns is a welcome refuge for those who find today’s interior design too “beigy”. When mentioned, the Moroccan style conjures up images of beautiful spice gardens, quaint and ornate fountains and lovely, well manicured riads.
It is largely characterised by:
Intricate carvings
Arched door ways
Strong jewel-tone fabrics
Furniture with elaborately wrought iron scrollwork, mother of pearl inlay, ornately carved wood and intricate mosaic or terra cotta tile details
Low backrests with no armrests
Lamps and pendants made from coloured glass and cut metal
Beni Ourain area rugs
Overhead canopies
Sensual Moroccan scent
Wall mirrors
